Skin Cancer Screening
To understand why screening for skin cancer is important one needs to look no further than some of the statistics compiled by the American Academy of Dermatology.
- More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year
- Current estimates are that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime
- 1 in 58 men and women will be diagnosed with melanoma during their lifetime
- One American dies of melanoma almost every hour (every 62 minutes)
- In 2008, over 8,000 deaths were attributed to melanoma
- More than 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma
If you have a personal history or family history of skin cancer it is highly recommended that you have a skin cancer-screening visit once a year during which a visual inspection of your entire skin will be performed.
